The winners of the HELOA Awards 2025 were announced at the National Conference on the evening of Thursday 16th January and presented by award sponsors.

HELOA Awards serve as a platform to recognise and celebrate the achievements of our members. They highlight Best Practice and allow colleagues across the sector to exchange knowledge on how best to assist students in making informed decisions that contribute positively to their academic and professional journeys.

After receiving an outstanding range of submissions, we’re delighted to announce the winners and shortlisted nominees.

Award for best undergraduate initiative, supported by UniTasterDays

UniTasterDays

Winners: University of Derby – Derby UG Student Recruitment Campaign 2023

The University of Derby is ranked Top 20 for teaching quality and student satisfaction and was awarded TEF Gold in 2023, but is not as well-known as competitors. The challenge was to raise awareness of Derby as a thought leader, an applied university with outstanding research, and increase applications to our courses.

To achieve this, the University of Derby planned an inspiring campaign that would resonate with Gen Z and their influencers. They encouraged students to think about how they could save the world by going to university, while profiling their own world-leading research, including the game-changing work linked to coral reef restoration.

Nominee: Cardiff Metropolitan University – Capital of Affordability

The Capital of… campaign is a strategic, three-year initiative by Cardiff Met to attract undergraduate students, emphasizing the unique benefits of studying in Cardiff compared to London.

Focusing on Cardiff’s affordability, quality of life, and easy transport links, the campaign targets schools and colleges in London, positioning Cardiff Met as a high-quality, cost-effective alternative. Initially aiming to reach five schools, the campaign surpassed expectations, engaging students from 12 institutions by November 2023. This outreach led to a 191% increase in applications from London, with significant interest from those directly involved in campaign sessions, highlighting Cardiff Met’s educational and lifestyle appeal.

Award for best postgraduate initiative, sponsored by FindAUniversity

Winners: University of Bristol – On-demand academic talks

The University of Bristol launched cost-effective, on-demand academic talks to boost postgraduate taught (PGT) leads and support recruitment. With no dedicated budget, over 150 programme-specific sessions were created using existing resources, generating 2,000+ views and over 1,000 high-quality leads.

This initiative, the second-highest lead generator for PGT Home after our flagship on-campus open day, delivered excellent application and firm acceptance rates. Developed from student feedback, the talks offer accessible, essential information and address declining attendance at live events. The project delivered an outstanding return on investment, enhanced cross-divisional collaboration, and aligns with the University’s goal to attract diverse, high-quality students.

Nominee: The University of Edinburgh – Always on: Launching Postgraduate Open Days on Demand

In a cost-neutral pilot Between March – September 2024 we rapidly scaled-up our video content to fulfil an unmet need among prospective postgraduates. Postgraduate Open Days on Demand (ODOD) showcased our extensive portfolio of +500 postgraduate programmes across 246 new videos (167 hours valuable new content), enabling an additional 1,209 pre- and post-applicants to register to receive essential course-level information on their terms.

Through tracking follow-up registrant behaviour, we established a correlation between engagement with the recordings, applying, offers and enrolments, thereby providing firm evidence of impact and rationale for roll-out during 2025.

Nominee: University of South Wales – Share your common worries – Instagram competition

The campaign ranged from the out-of-home pitch-side adverts and tickets secured via our partnership with the Welsh Rugby Union, to a social media-driven insights campaign which provided unique insights that has directly informed the University of South Wales’ postgraduate marketing and recruitment strategy.

Using the comment box on Instagram stories, USW created an engaging post and incentivised competition for their followers to share their worries about postgraduate study. One of USW’s postgraduate recruitment priorities is to improve progression rates from undergraduate study to postgraduate among their current student cohort so they found this opportunity to use social media in this way was a fantastic opportunity.

Award for best practice in widening participation, outreach, and access, supported by The Brilliant Club

Winners: University of East London – Phenomenal Physiology

The Phenomenal Physiology Project is a flagship initiative at the University of East London that has inspired under-represented Year 10 students since 2017. Through a six-week programme, students participate in hands-on science workshops led by trained Curriculum Ambassadors.

These sessions, held during lessons or after school, ignite interest in higher education and science degrees. The programme concludes with students presenting their experiment findings to a panel of academics, fostering confidence and empowering diverse young learners to pursue academic and professional success in science. The project is a vital platform for promoting diversity in STEM education.

Nominee: University of Sheffield – Access Development Project Curriculum Redesign

The Access Development Project redefined the University of Sheffield’s approach to widening access, empowering staff to become subject matter experts in underrepresented groups through conducting extensive sector research and horizon scanning. This allowed the team to develop an evidence-led curriculum which is designed to address the specific barriers experienced by participants.

Nominee: University of South Wales – USW: Aspire2HE

The Aspire2HE project, delivered by the University of South Wales, is designed to engage with individuals who face significant barriers in accessing higher education.

By working with charities, local councils, and various organisations, the Aspire2HE project identifies groups that are underrepresented in higher education – such as care leavers, young carers, those with a disability, are part of the Global Majority, individuals who are first in their immediate family to go to university, service children, those who are NEET, homeless individuals, and more – providing them with tailored support, information, advice, and guidance on accessing higher education.

Nominee: Teesside University – Transition residential for students with social and communication disabilities

Teesside University (TU) for the last four years has delivered a transitional residential programme for prospective students with mental health conditions and/or social and communication disabilities.

Based upon student feedback, the programme has developed from a half day campus visit to the current residential offer. The programme seeks to increase students’ confidence and support their transition to higher education through equipping them with knowledge and experience for their first weeks at TU. Delivered within small groups, the residential has engaged with students with a range of needs and has been effective in supporting the development of a supportive peer network, providing information about the support available to students and orientating them to the campus and the town.

Award for best small or low budget initiative, sponsored by Rad Brothers

Winners: Imperial College London – The Homework Club in White City

The Homework Club is an impactful initiative run on a small budget that reaches out to young people who are not always targeted by outreach programmes and who would not usually engage with a university.

Nominee: De Montfort University – A Germ’s Journey: The GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ attempt

A Germ’s Journey GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title attempt for the largest hand hygiene lesson (multiple venues) represents the power of innovation on a small budget.

Despite having a small team and limited resources, DMU’s Germ’s Journey team and DMU’s Widening Access team successfully organised a nationwide hand hygiene lesson that engaged over 20,000 children and brought attention to an essential public health issue.

Nominee: Guildhall School of Music and Drama – Get Ready for Guildhall

Get Ready for Guildhall is a one-day transition support event exclusive to offer-holders who meet one or more of the underrepresented characteristics set out in Guildhall School of Music & Drama’s Access and Participation Plan.

The event introduces attendees to the student services they will access during their studies, allowing for early intervention and support where needed. Vitally, the event provides an opportunity to meet offer-holders and current students from similar backgrounds ahead of their studies commencing, enhancing their sense of belonging. Informed by evidence and student consultation, the event demonstrably reduces nerves and increases confidence and preparedness for study.

Nominee: University of South Wales – Clearing Stories

The University of South Wales (USW) needed a fresh and creative approach to our Clearing campaign in 2024 and one which specifically addressed the personal concerns, anxieties and worries of students going through Clearing.

USW created 8 self-contained stories centred around 4 personas, which showed students confused and uncertain at the beginning but by the end they were fulfilled – thanks to USW. Their visual storytelling, where students were interviewed within their study environment on campus, captivated the audience, forming an emotional connection and becoming relatable to prospective applicants who found themselves in the same circumstance.

Award for best practice in student recruitment, sponsored by UK University Search

Winners: University of Derby – Get Ready for Uni

Our Get Ready for Uni project aimed to create an innovative new student recruitment campaign that focuses specifically on supporting students transitioning from school/college to university.

Working with our alumnus, educational expert and well-known Gogglebox TV personality Baasit Siddiqui, we created free on-demand videos and resources that not only hit the brief, but stood out as something different and resonated as relevant with a Gen Z audience. Aiming to enhance engagement in the project, we also introduced a podcast competition which invited students to create and share a self-made podcast focussed on tackling a significant global societal challenge.

Nominee: University of South Wales – University of South Wales Crime Scene to Court Taster Day

The University of South Wales (USW) hosts the Crime Scene to Court Taster Day, engaging hundreds of Years 12 and 13 students across the UK. This interactive event, featuring multidisciplinary activities, aims to enhance awareness of USW’s offerings in Law, Forensics, and Criminal Justice courses.

Feedback indicated 92% of attendees found the event useful in connecting them to Higher Education. The initiative generated 362 enquiries and led to 47 applications for the 2024 intake, promoting higher education accessibility. This model demonstrates USW’s commitment to support students and effective student recruitment initiatives, meriting recognition for the HELOA 2025 Award.
